bio
Stephen Michael Lobo was born in the fall of 1973 just outside of Toronto, Ontario, Canada. He is the middle child, his father, an electrician, born in Tanzania, and his mother, a nurse, born in Iran.
Stephen attended Catholic school. Although lack of attendance got him kicked out of two high schools, he somehow found himself at the University of Toronto pursuing a degree in Environmental Science. It was at this time that Stephen, having never acted before, was encouraged by his younger brother who was directing a community theatre production of Grease: The Musical to audition for a part. He was offered the role of Kenekie and caught the acting bug.
Stephen’s first paying gig was as “Tony” in Toronto’s long running dinner theatre production of Tony n’ Tina’s Wedding. However, Stephen’s passion and excitement for his first outing as a professional actor didn’t quite make up for his lack of experience. His involvement in the show was short lived, replaced in under a month. A humbling experience to say the least, Stephen understood he needed to step up his game if he was going to take this new career seriously.
So, he traveled to England to train at the Drama Centre London. Stephen found digs in a room above the White Horse pub in Belsize Park where he pulled pints on the weekends in exchange for room and board. For the next three years Stephen honed his craft performing in such classic works as The Seagull, Paradise Lost, The Madras House, The Dutch Courtesan, All’s Well That Ends Well, The Last Days of Don Juan, A Month in the Country, Napoli Milionaria, and Britannicus.
Upon finishing his training, and after a few stints on stage and screen in London, Stephen sent an audition tape back to Canada for a new series called Godiva’s and was chosen for a starring role. Stephen travelled to Vancouver, BC to shoot the series which eventually won him the Leo Award for Best Lead Performance by a Male in a Dramatic Series.
He then worked back to back over the next 4 years playing leading roles in Falcon Beach, Painkiller Jane, Little Mosque on the Prairie, and is currently recurring on the hit TV series Smallville. His feature film career has had him working on The Wedding Date, Kardia, Love and Other Dilemmas, and the upcoming film Fathers and Sons. He has also enjoyed leading roles on stage in such plays as Jesus Hopped the ‘A’ Train, Closer, A Little Grain of Sand, and Home Free.
Stephen currently makes his home in Vancouver, BC where he lives with his partner, Sonja Bennett and their two cats. They are expecting their first child early next year.
